All the myths of college eating habits are true, at least when referring to Bulldog Kupono Low. The sophomore native of Fremont, Calif. can compete with the most talented soccer players in the nation, but that is not his only skill. Low can also compete with the best food digesters on any college campus in the country. Low?s favorite snack doesn?t include any fresh fruits or vegetables, instead Low prefers to munch on Doritos dipped in Tabasco sauce to keep his energy up. But that?s not all, next to his bag of chips, Low must have a glass of his favorite soda by his side.
?I?m sure Chez (head coach Dave Chesler) doesn?t like my eating habits,? Low said. ?He hasn?t said anything to me yet, but at every restaurant we eat at on the road I order a Coke with my meal. The whole team gives me a hard time about all the soda I drink.?
Although Low doesn?t necessarily put all the right ingredients in his body that nutrition experts might suggest, his performance on the field is not one bit hindered by his diet. In fact, Low believes his pregame menu is part of the reason he is so talented with the soccer ball.
?I have a ritual of drinking Pedialyte before every game,? Low said. ?I?m sure it?s mostly psychological, but I feel like it gives me energy to play.?
If Pedialyte is Low?s psychological weapon, it seems to be working. Low just netted his first two collegiate goals last weekend against TCU sending the Bulldogs and Horned Frogs into double-overtime. Although the Bulldogs lost, Low has made a name for himself as an offensive threat to the Bulldog frontline.
Starting as defender, Low has been dabbling in the forward offensive position for the Bulldogs more and more as they are searching for the right combinations in game situations. This forward position happened to be the role Low was playing when he traveled through Horned Frog territory finding his two ?Dog goals.
?Chez has been looking at me to play the forward position lately and that is where I like to be,? Low said. ?I like to be in an offensive position where I can attack more.?
Offense or not, Low said he is only thinking about what is best for the team. Whichever position he is called to play, Low said he will take his swig of Pedialyte and put forth his best effort for the ?Dogs.
