It was a battle of the Bulldogs in the final match of the Nike Goal Rush Classic Sunday afternoon. The Fresno State Bulldogs fought to stay on top as the Gonzaga Bulldogs persistenly gnawed at their heels in an overtime crowd-pleaser that resulted in a 2-1 victory for Fresno State.
Head coach Dave Chesler was pleased with the 'Dogs persistent performance giving credit to his team for taking advantage of the "flat" Gonzaga Bulldogs.
"In the first half I thought we totally dominated," Chesler said. "We created a dozen chances that didn't go in, which is frustrating, but we stuck with it."
The first goal of the game did not surface until the 63rd-minute when Hugo Alcaraz connected a pass to teammate Noah Delgado who found net from five yards out.
The Gonzaga Bulldogs answered Fresno State with a goal of their own from Jason Kuska at the 79-minute mark.
As with Fresno State's Friday match against Oakland, the time ran out forcing the two Bulldog teams into sudden-death overtime. This time, however, Fresno came out on top. At the 95:45 mark Alcaraz again took control of the ball and connected with Dana McGregor who responded with the game-winning goal.
Fresno State took third in the Nike Goal Rush Classic, behind title-winning Stanford and second place Gonzaga. Oakland took fourth place.
