Fresno State and Woodward Park Welcome the WAC
This Saturday, Woodward Park will host the men?s and women?s cross country championships. The
men?s race, which begins at 10 a.m., includes all WAC schools except Hawai?i. The women?s final
begins at 11 a.m. in which all eight WAC schools will compete. Last year Woodward Park hosted
the NCAA Region 8 Championships and it has previously been the home of 12 other NCAA Regionals. Brigham Young, now in the Mountain West Conference, won both the men?s and women?s titles in 1998.
Men hope to surprise the competition
Senior Tim Padilla has been the men?s top runner all season. He posted his season best of 26:25
at Woodward Park during the Fresno State Invitational in mid September. However, he has been
pushed since then by freshmen Alex Mason, Phillip Ogilvie, and Robert Vaca. Ogilvie?s season
best of 26:26 was also run at Woodward. Also expected to crack the top five are juniors Patrick
Hogan and Armando Negrete and freshman Sean Moody. Last season the men finished 11th out of 13
teams.
Women hoping to surprise WAC
The women?s team is not expected to compete with the best this year, but with the top five
running consistently close together in the past few weeks, a high finish is possible. Sophomore
Jennifer Smith and freshman Sandi Russler will challenge the top runners in the conference.
Smith ran a personal best of 18:32 at Woodward in the Fresno State Invitational. Sophomore
Rachel Bauer, junior Brianna Denley, and senior Laura Bracht will contribute to the team?s
overall score. Last season the women placed 13th among 16 schools.
Top WAC Competitors
Clyde Colenso of SMU and Dwight Davis of Tulsa figure to be two of the top competitors in the
men?s race this weekend. Colenso posted a season best of 24:18 at last weeks NCAA Pre-Nationals.
Davis has recorded a season best time of 25:09 In the women?s race, Rice is a possible title
contender. The team placed first at the Texas A&M Invitational and top runner Shaquandra
Roberson figures to challenge for the individual title. Her season best time of 17:41 was
recorded at the North Texas Invitational. Casey McGuire-Turcotte also figures to run with the
best. Her season best time of 18:29 was run at the Willamette Invitational in early October.
