FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State could do no wrong for five consecutive games, matching the program?s longest win streak ever, but the San Jose Spartans proved too pesky for the Bulldogs as the two squads battled for a 120-minute scoreless tie to open Western Athletic Conference competition Tuesday night in Bulldog Stadium.
A physical game turned down-right ugly in the second half when eight cards were given causing three ejections. First to be thrown out of the stadium was Spartan Head Coach Philippe Blin in the 66th minute. Shortly thereafter, Blin was joined by Jolene Keel. Keel received her red card after her second yellow in the 71st minute. Bulldog Aimee Thompson found her spot off the field after her second yellow in the game?s 79th minute.
Fresno State out fouled the Spartans 16 to 13, but fell three shy of San Jose State?s card total of six. Megan McAlpin received her yellow card in the game?s 73rd minute, while Spartans Momi Aiu, Kelli Mahoney and Kristyn Mescher all were named recipients of the cautions.
As for the soccer match itself, most of the game?s action lied between the two penalty boxes, with the action resembling more of a tennis match with the volleys launched in sheer desperation to generate some for of offense. The Bulldogs threatened rarely in the 120-minute match and fired 18 shots, which Spartan keeper Amee Brown saved five.
The Spartan attack had more chances to crack the back of the net, but ?Dog keeper Jennifer Johnstone performed admirably in recording her sixth shutout of the season, despite the chaotic style of play coming at her.
The Bulldogs will see their next action Friday when they take on Hawai?i at 1 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium.
