Men surprise the competition at WAC
Saturday at Woodward Park, the men?s team ran impressively at the WAC Championships. The
top five men were all freshman, led by Freshman of the Year award winner Phillip Ogilvie.
Ogilvie set a season best mark of 26:01 and placed 12th overall. He was followed by Robert
Vaca, Alex Mason, Josh Roddy and Sean Moody who all set personal records. These top five
finished within 30 seconds of each other, an excellent mark.
Women set personal best marks
The women?s team finished sixth, but provided promise for the future. Freshman Sandi Russler
was the first Bulldog to finish, setting a personal record of 19:01 and finishing 20th overall. Sophomore Rachel Bauer came in at 23rd and also set her own personal record at 19:06. Senior Laura Bracht turned in a solid performance, finishing sixth among the Bulldogs and setting her personal record to 19:16. Seniors Autumn Lodwick and Tarah Gregg also notched their best times of the season.
WAC Championship Notes
The winner of the men?s competition went to Clyde Colenso of Southern Methodist. His time of
24:19 is a new Woodward Park 8,000 meter record, previously set by Coley Candaele of Cal Poly
in a time of 24:48. Colenso also earned WAC Athlete of the Year. The women?s individual
winner was Fride Vullum of Tulsa who ran the course in 17:37. She was also selected for
Athlete of the Year with her strong performance. The women?s Freshman of the Year award was
won by Tanya Wright of Rice who placed ninth overall. The Coach of the Year awards went ot
both Rice coaches, Jon Warren (Men) and Jim Bevin (Women).
?Dogs head to Portland for West Regionals
The cross country teams will head to Portland, Ore. on November 13th for the NCAA West Regional
Championships.
