Bulldog Volleyball Collects Win Over SMU

FRESNO, Calif. - Hitting .273 for the match with 10 aces, 55 digs and 7.5 blocks, Fresno State moved into third place in the Western Athletic Conference race after posting a 15-10, 15-12 and 15-8 over the visiting SMU Mustangs.
The Bulldogs were spearheaded by a pair of outside hitters in senior Anamie Buckelew and junior Malia Malu. Buckelew, who has been the 'Dogs top kill leader in the last 13 straight matches, notched a match-high 18 kills and added seven digs and a block solo while hitting .325 (18-5-40) in the three-game sweep. Malu collected her fifth double-double on the season with 14 kills and 15 digs. Hitting a career-best .591 (14-1-22), Malu also had three aces and two blocks.
Freshman middle blocker Lindsay Closs appeared in her first conference match of the season after missing the last 12 matches with a stress fracture. Junior defensive specialist Leilua Satele tied for match-high honors in aces with three with Malu. Senior setter Diann Aufdermaur had her 11th double-figure dig match on the season with 10 digs against the Mustangs.
With their third consecutive win, the Bulldogs improve to 15-11 and 9-4 in the WAC while SMU fell to 18-12 overall and 7-4 in the league standings.
Fresno State closes out its 1999 home schedule tomorrow evening, Nov. 19, in the North Gym against the TCU Horned Frogs at 7:00 pm. Fresno State will honor its three seniors: Diann Aufdermaur, Anamie Buckelew and Adrienne Sankey in a pregame ceremony. The Fresno State-TCU match can be seen live on MediaOne (local cable channel 14) and heard live on KFIG 1430 AM.
