Bulldog Volleyball Wraps Up 1999 Season with Awards Banquet

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State Nets Four All-WAC-- The 1999 Western Athletic Conference announced its 14-player all-conference team and four Bulldogs were selected by the league coaches. Senior outside hitter Anamie Buckelew (Gresham, Ore.) was selected first team while senior setter Diann Aufdermaur (Manteca), senior middle blocker Adrienne Sankey (Richmond, BC, Canada) and junior defensive specialist Leilua Satele (Long Beach) were second team picks. The four all-conference honorees tied for the most selections in a year in the program's history. The record was four All-WAC picks in 1992 under head coach Lindy Vivas.
10: The Magic Number-- For the fourth time under Vivas the Bulldogs have recorded at least 10 conference wins. The Bulldogs wrapped up third place in the WAC with a 10-4 record. Fresno State closed out the 1999 league season with four consecutive wins while winning 10 of the last 12. The most conference wins posted by the Bulldog volleyball program is 11 (1984, 1992, 1997) and Vivas has guided the 'Dogs to two 11-win conference seasons. Bulldog Award Winners-- ? Junior defensive specialist Leilua Satele came away with three individual awards including Academic Excellence, Most Improved and the Sally Adley Coaches Award. She set individual single-season career highs in 1999 and was the only Bulldog to garner all-tournament honors at the Fresno State Invitational. With 10 or more digs in nine matches this season and having played in all 98 games of the 28 matches, she led the team in service aces with a career-best 31 while adding personal bests in assists (15) and digs (218).
? Junior outside hitter Malia Malu (Torrance) collected the Best Defensive award after being the team?s top dig leader with a career-high 309. As the hottest Bulldog down the stretch, Malu posted six double-figure kill matches in her last 10 outings while tallying 25 assists, 14 aces, 19 blocks and 132 digs. With eight double-figure kill and 14 double-figure dig matches on the season, Malu notched her first career 20/20 match with a career-best 21 kills and had 22 digs in the season finale against Sacramento State. Finishing third on the team with a career-best 224 kills the 5-10 liberal studies major finished her season ranked No. 10 in career assists (430).
? The Most Valuable Player award went to seniors Diann Aufdermaur and Anamie Buckelew. Both garnering their first career Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards this season, Aufdermaur and Buckelew concluded their career with their names dotted through out the school?s recordbook. Aufdermaur was the second player in Bulldog volleyball history to post 4,000 career assists and finished her career with 4,345 to rank second all-time and eighth all-time in WAC history.
? Also capturing the Best Offensive Player award, Buckelew closed out the year with 15 straight double-figure kill matches, including five 20-plus kill performances. Having collected 10 or more kills in all matches but two, Buckelew also played in all 98 games of the 28-match slate. She set career-highs in kills (492), hitting efficiency (.227) and digs (280) as a senior. She also collected her 1,000th career kill against San Jose State and became the eighth Bulldog in school history to reach the 1,000 plateau.
Second Half Surge-- Fresno State was happy to put its non-conference schedule behind them when October rolled around. The Bulldogs compiled a 6-7 worksheet in the month of September with one invitational win. Fresno State turned itself around in October and November with a 10-5 worksheet. The Bulldogs won 10 of their last 13 and went 15-8 in its last 23.
Head Coach Lindy Vivas-- Head coach Lindy Vivas (UCLA '80) concluded her ninth season at the helm of Bulldog volleyball with a 16-12 overall record and a third place finish in the WAC with a 10-4 mark. Guiding the program to three NCAA Tournament appearances, Vivas has been a two-time WAC Coach of the Year honoree. With five postseason appearances in the last nine years, the Bulldogs have made two NCAA Tournament showings (1991-98) and three NIVC appearances (1995-94-92) under Vivas since her arrival in 1991. Averaging 20 wins a year with a 78-36 (.684) home court record, Vivas has coached three all-region and 15 All-WAC picks. Vivas, who led the Bulldogs to three straight WAC Volleyball Tournaments (1996-98), owns a 13-year career record of 249-173 (.590) and a nine-year Fresno State record of 177-113 (.610).
NCAA Tournament-- Only Hawai'i was the lone representative in the NCAA Tournament from the WAC. Hawai'i, which hosts the 1999 NCAA Tournament, played in its 18th tournament. UH has won the NCAA title three times and has finished second twice. Hawai'i defeated Utah on Dec. 3 to advance to Regionals for the eighth time in the 1990's. In Regional play on Dec. 9, Hawai'i lost in four games to Texas A&M.
Last Time Out-- In the final match of the season, junior outside hitter Malia Malu (Torrance) collected her first career 20/20 match against Sacramento State with 21 kills and a team-high 22 digs ... She also posted her eighth match in double-figure kills and 14th double-figure dig match ... Malu finished the season with 10-plus kills in six of her last 10 matches, including five double-doubles ... It also was her seventh double-double on the season ... Malu finished the season with a team-best 309 digs and was fourth in kills (224) ... Fresno State finished the 1999 campaign by winning 10 of its last 13 and posted a 14-7 mark in the last 21 matches ... Senior outside hitter Anamie Buckelew (Gresham, Ore.) concluded her career with 15 consecutive matches in double-figure kills ... She, along with junior defensive specialist Leilua Satele (Long Beach State), were the only two to play in all 98 games.
WAC Play In Review-- Fresno State concluded its WAC season at home with a pair of three-game sweeps over SMU and TCU on Nov. 18 & 19 ... With the wins, Fresno State solidified third place in the league standings with a 10-4 mark ... The ten wins mark the third time under Vivas that the Bulldogs have posted at least ten conference victories (the school record for league wins are 11 in 1984, 1992 and 1997) ... Fresno State improved upon its fourth place finish last year after collecting a 7-7 worksheet ... The four all-conference selections this season tied for the most picks in a year in the program's history ... The record was first set in 1992 with four under Vivas ... Vivas has now coached 15 all-conference picks and has had at least one all-conference selection in eight of her nine years ... The Bulldogs swept through conference play (10-4) but were caught short twice with a pair of losses to third-ranked Hawai'i and San Jose State ... UH won its fourth-straight WAC regular-season title and received the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament ... Missing 12 matches on the season with a stress fracture and the flu, freshman middle blocker Lindsay Closs (Spokane, Wash.) did not compete in a WAC match until the final two on the year against SMU and TCU at home.
The Turn-A-Round-- After opening the season with a 1-4 record, Fresno State broke its early slump by winning five of its next seven. Fresno State picked up an invitational title at the USF/Golden Gate Classic and then went on the road for a non-conference victory over San Diego State. The 'Dogs had strung together four straight wins. The Bulldogs then dropped their next four for their longest drought on the year. Fresno State bounced back by winning five consecutive matches for their longest win streak on the season.
What's in a Loss-- Fresno State endured its longest losing streak on the season with four straight from Sept. 25 through Oct. 9. With three of the four losses coming on the road, the Bulldogs also came across four teams which have since or had been ranked in the Top 25 as well as receiving votes in the coaches' poll. Fresno State's drought began outside of conference play against the University of San Diego. The Toreros, who had a No. 18 preseason ranking, jumped into the Top 25 after their win over Fresno State and currently stands at No. 25. The 'Dogs hosted then sixth-ranked Stanford, which held a No. 2 preseason ranking, and currently is second in the national poll. The Bulldogs lost both WAC matches to No. 3 Hawai'i. Fresno State encountered a red-hot San Jose State team which jetted off to its best start in school history with a 15-1 mark after the win over the 'Dogs, they've received votes in the Top 25 this season. After finishing with a 16-12 overall mark, Fresno State suffered a four-game loss to Sacramento State (Big Sky champions) to end the season. All told, Fresno State came across five teams which were ranked or received votes and played seven different teams that were NCAA Tournament-bound in 1999.
Buckelew Nailed Down Senior Year-- Starting the year off with eight straight matches in double-digit kills, Anamie Buckelew had seven 20-plus kill performances, including a 31-kill match against TCU on Oct. 23. Averaging 5.02 kills per game overall and 5.42 in conference matches, she strung together 15 consecutive double-figure kill matches with eight double-doubles. In addition to 14 ten-plus dig matches on the year, including one 20-plus dig outing, Buckelew also had 13 double-doubles this season. With 10 or more kills in 17 of her last 19 matches, she had nine double-doubles in her last 19 contests. She averaged 19.07 kills (5.50 kpg) a match in her last 15 appearances. In addition, Buckelew ranked among the WAC's top two in kill per game all season long and finished second. In addition, her 5.02 kills per game ranked sixth-best in the WAC's single-season recordbook. Hitting .269 (286-103-681) in her last 15 matches (52 games), Buckelew led the Bulldogs with a career-high 492 kills and finished second in digs (280) and total blocks (55). She had 10-plus kills in every match but two this season.
Historic Moves-- Diann Aufdermaur reached the 4,000 career assist plateau on Oct. 31 against UTEP in game one of the three-game sweep over the Miners. She became the second Bulldog ever to dish out at least 4,000 assists and posted 4,345 to rank second all-time at Fresno State and eighth in WAC history. At Fresno State, she also ranks No. 3 in assists per game (11.53), No. 7 in digs (935) and digs per game (2.48). Ranked seventh in career kills (1,132) and total attempts (2,892), Buckelew became the eighth Bulldog to collect 1,000 career kills on Nov. 5. Having played in 388 career games, Buckelew also ranks No. 6 in block asssits (217), No. 7 in total blocks (251), No. 9 in games played and kills per game (2.92), and No. 10 in digs (841). Adrienne Sankey finished her career with five top 10 rankings in blocks per game (No.3, 1.04), block assists (No. 5, 225), total blocks (No. 5, 291), block solos (No. 7, 66) and hitting percentage (.261) at Fresno State.
