FRESNO, Calif. - Entering the 1999 season, senior middle blocker Adrienne Sankey ranked in the top 10 of every major blocking category. The most notable being sixth on the career total blocks list. Sankey, majoring in biology, is a three-time scholar athlete and also received the team academic excellence award in 1997. With her name in the record books Sankey will no doubt leave an impression on the Fresno State volleyball program for years to come.
Receiving the opportunity to attend school and participate in the volleyball program has meant so much to Sankey. The impact that Fresno State has had on her is just as great as the stamp she has left on the university.
"I?ve got so much out of my experience here at Fresno State," Sankey said. "Not just from volleyball, but from school and from being away from home. I?ve matured so much as a person and as a volleyball player."
Sankey, a product out of Richmond, British Columbia, will always remember the team unity that existed in her stay. The women she competed with and against will have a lasting effect on her.
"My freshman year was difficult, being so far away from home", Sankey said. "But being part of a team was a huge boost for me in the beginning. It is just like a family away from home."
With her great leaping ability and impressive blocking technique, the 6-1 senior will be remembered as a player who did the grunt work at the net. Throughout her career, Sankey has noticed drastic improvements in her volleyball game, due to hard work and dedication.
"I?ve gotten much quicker," Sankey said. "I read opponents much better now and I have a good feel for the flow of the game. I believe I?ve also developed greater consistency and my skills are better mechanically."
In her final season as a Bulldog, Sankey hopes to continue the success that the team has enjoyed the past few weeks. Her goal is to get the team to its peak and be prepared for every obstacle that presents itself.
"At this point, I want to help my team to reach the highest place we can in the WAC," Sankey said. "After that our team would definitely like to compete in the postseason."
If the Bulldogs can reach the postseason, Sankey will leave one last impression, and one that won?t be forgotten.
