Bulldog Women in Fourth after Day Three at WAC Championship

Fresno, Calif. - Senior pole vaulter Melissa Price defended her conference title has the women moved into fourth place after three days at the WAC Championship in Ft. Collins, Colo. With 27.5 points they trail leader BYU, who has 68.5 total points. Then men are tied for fifth with host Colorado State at 20 points. Todays action saw preliminary heats in the running events, and finals in the womens hammer, pole vault, shot put, and long jump, and the mens high jump, discus, long jump and javelin.
Although not one of her best jumps of the season, Price was able to win her second WAC outdoor crown when she cleared 12-6. Junior Aleyna Tomate tied for sixth, clearing a height of 11-5 3/4, and freshman Brooke Lankard no-heighted. Price has already automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships, while Tomate and Lankard are provisional qualifiers.
Senior Sarah Goodlaw took third in the shot put with a career-best throw of 48-6 3/4. Goodlaw also picked up four points for the Dogs with a fifth-place finish in the hammer (177-11). In the finals of the womens long jump, junior Brandi Jenkins set a personal best with a leap of 18-1 1/2, finishing in a tie for 14th.
In the sprints two Fresno State women have qualified for Saturdays finals in the 100, 200 and 400. Senior Angela Daigle took first in her heat in the 100 with a time of 11.58 and will be one of the eight competitors in tomorrows final. Daigle will also run in the 200, winning her heat in a time of 23.80. The other Bulldog sprinter to advance was sophomore Jynette Grayson in the 400. Grayson was second in her heat with a mark of 54.35.
For the men, senior Mike Ward qualified for the finals in the 200 and 400 after winning his heat in each event. Ward set a new personal record in the 200 with a time of 20.88. His mark of 46.75 in the 400 was a season-best. Ramsey Jay was also a winner in the 400, clocking in at 46.68.
Other qualifiers for Saturdays finals are senior Ron Murray and freshman Gabe Orosco. Murray qualified in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 14.72, while Oroscos time of 1:51.59 in the 800 was among the top eight. Sprinters E.J. Jackson, Tierre Sams and Daunte Burks failed to make the final cut in the 100.
Senior Darrell Higgins moved into fourth all-time on Fresno States javelin list with a throw of 205-9, picking up two points for the Dogs with a seventh-place finish. In the long jump, sophomore C.J. Nakayama was the top Bulldog finisher, taking fourth with a jump of 23-7 1/2.
The competition will conclude Saturday with finals in the running events, as well as the mens hammer, pole vault and shot put, and the womens high jump, javelin, triple jump and discus.
