Fresno, Calif. - The presidents of the Western Athletic Conference universities today awarded the 1999-2000 mens and womens basketball championship tournament to Fresno State and the city of Fresno. Fresno State, Southern Methodist and Tulsa were named the three finalists in the bid for the league tournament at the athletics directors meetings last month.
The tournament dates at downtown Fresnos Selland Arena are set for March 8-11 with the complete schedule of games still to be determined.
Fresno State has played host to seven WAC championships in five different sports since joining the league in 1992, including the baseball, softball and mens soccer championship this past year. Both the mens and womens basketball teams have participated in all seven basketball championships. UTEP is the only other remaining WAC school to have played host to the mens basketball championship finals, in 1984, 1985 and 1990.
"For Fresno State, the city of Fresno and Bulldog fans in the entire Valley, I am thrilled we were awarded the tournament," said Fresno State Athletics Director Al Bohl. "This is wonderful news and I want to thank everyone in our department and at the Fresno Convention Bureau who put together our proposal."
The presidents awarded the 2001 tournament to the University of Tulsa.
