ANCHORAGE (AP) - The Cyclones of Iowa State blew past the Fresno State Bulldogs in the last minutes of play to capture victory in Game 11 of the Carrs Great Alaska Shootout. Iowa State staged a 12-3 run late in the second-half to win 78-71.
Iowa State out-rebounded the Bulldogs 2-1 in the second-half, ending the game with 38 rebounds to Fresno State's 23.
Cyclone forward Stevie Johnson hit four free throws in the last :28 of play and led the Iowa State with 8 rebounds.
"Rebounding is a very important part of our offense," said Johnson, who went seven-for-eight from the line.
Iowa State head coach Larry Eustachy said the game was one of the better wins he had ever experienced as a coach.
"I don't know when I've ever been prouder of some players," he said.
Bulldog's head coach Jerry Tarkanian said he did not play guard Courtney Alexander because Alexander said he was sick and because he was late for the bus to go to practice.
"[Alexander's Absence] I don't want to talk about that," said Tarkanian.
Despite throwing up at half-time, Fresno State's Melvin Ely played 31 minutes, scored 17 points and pulled down 7 rebounds.
Fresno State guard Chris Herren received player of the game honors, leading the Bulldogs offense with 23 points and three assists. Herren said the lack of bench depth played a major role in the loss.
"Obviously [not having CourtneyAlexander's] a big impact," Herren said. "That put us down to only having six players."
With the win, the Cyclones placed third in the 1998 Carrs Great Alaska Shootout. Fresno State finished fifth.
