MALIBU, Calif. (AP) - Marc McDowell scored 16 points and Kelvin Gibbs added 15 Thursday night to lead Pepperdine to a 78-71 victory over Fresno State.
Robert Fomby had 12 points and five assists for the Waves, who trailed early but took the lead for good on Craig Lewis' 3-point basket that made it 33-30 with 1:38 left in the first half.
Pepperdine (3-0) opened the gap to 50-36 early in the second half, then the Bulldogs (2-1) pulled within 50-42 on Terrance Roberson's 3-pointer with 13:29 remaining.
That was as close as Fresno State got until the final margin, however. Melvin Ely had game highs of 17 points and 14 rebounds for Fresno State, and Courtney Alexander had 16 points. Roberson added 15 in the loss.
The Waves held a significant edge at the free throw line, where they made 20 of 35 to the Bulldogs' 11 of 16.
