ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Courtney Alexander tossed in 22 points and Terrance Roberson added 16 to help Fresno State to an 82-79 squeaker over Alaska Anchorage on Thursday in an opening-round matchup in the Great Alaska Shootout.
The lead went back and forth in the second half until a follow by Melvin Ely put Fresno State (3-1) ahead for good, 76-75, with about four minutes left.
Ely, who finished with 13 points, later hit two free throws with 10 seconds on the clock to provide the Bulldogs' winning margin.
Chris Herren scored 15 for Fresno State and Larry Abney grabbed 11 rebounds.
Ed Kirk paced the Division II Seawolves (2-1) with 18 points and Chris Hamey contributed 17.
Fresno State will meet the winner of Thursday's late game between top-ranked Duke and Notre Dame in the Shootout's second round, with Alaska Anchorage playing the loser of that matchup.
Alaska Anchorage took a 14-12 lead about five minutes into the game, and stayed ahead until the break by as much as 10 points.
Despite being smaller than the Bulldogs, the Seawolves consistently worked the ball into the paint. They scored 10 of their 16 first-half baskets inside, and led at the half 46-40.
