A Look At the Horned Frogs
The Bulldogs travel to Fort Worth this weekend to face a Horned Frog team that has improved by leaps and bounds. Last weekend the Frogs defeated Tulsa, 2-1, in overtime for their first WAC victory ever.
This weekend TCU ran into trouble as it lost to Air Force on Friday, 0-2, and New Mexico on Sunday, 0-1. Before the loss to Air Force, the Frogs had a six-game winning streak.
Leading the way for TCU has been midfielder Charlie Schulz, who leads the team with 11 points (five goals, one assist). Goalkeeper Ian Keate has been steady in goal for the Frogs. This season he has a 1.11 GAA with three shutouts.
Fresno State will try to continue its winning streak against TCU. The Bulldogs have won all three matches between the two teams while scoring an average of 3.6 goals per game.
Fresno State Tangles With SMU
The Bulldogs will get one of their toughest challenges of the WAC season when they face SMU on Sunday in Dallas. The Mustangs were picked to win the WAC this season after winning last year's championship. SMU started the season ranked sixth in the NSCAA/Umbro poll, but dropped out of the rankings after losses to Saint Louis and Southwest Missouri State.
After tying Tulsa in their first conference match of the season, SMU has picked up two WAC wins by defeating New Mexico, 1-0, on Friday and Air Force, 2-1, on Sunday.
Forward Luis Gonzalez has been the Mustangs big scoring threat this season. He leads the team with seven goals and is in the top-five in the WAC for goals and points (15). Byron Foss has played very strong for SMU in goal, allowing only 13 goals with five shutouts.
The seven previous matches between the Bulldogs and the Mustangs have been very close. Fresno State leads the series, 4-3, but has dropped the past two matches. SMU's 3-0 victory last season was the first match in eight years to be decided by more than one goal.
Bulldogs Continue Streak Against UNLV
Fresno State kept its undefeated streak against UNLV alive on Friday by defeating the Rebels, 3-2. The Bulldogs are 9-0-1 against UNLV since the Rebels beat the Bulldogs, 0-3, in 1988.
Forward Matt Williams got Fresno State off on the right foot by heading in a crossing pass from midfielder Steven Morales (Grand Terrace). Twenty minutes later Williams would take a pass from forward Matt Flynn (Redmond, Wash.) and beat the UNLV goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
The Rebels would answer with a goal of their own to pull within one at halftime. Fresno State's lead would remain at one until the 83rd minute when Williams scored his third goal of the match on a break away. UNLV scored two minutes later but the Bulldogs shut down the Rebels the rest of the way to preserve the victory.
Williams Joins Hat Trick Club
Matt Williams became the 17th member of the Fresno State Hat Trick Club when he scored three goals against UNLV on Friday. The last Bulldog to score a hat trick was Steve Patterson in 1996. Francisco Numo was the first Fresno State player to get a hat trick when he scored five goals against Fresno Pacific in 1972. Here's a look at the Bulldog hat tricks in he '90's:
Gerell Elliott 3 UC Irvine & San Jose State 1991 Sterling Wescott 3 San Jose State 1992 Jason Berg 3 University of San Francisco 1993 Donovan Martinez 3 Loyola Marymount 1993 Chuck Lively 3 Loyola Marymount 1994 Steve Patterson 3 UNLV 1996 Matt Williams 3 UNLV 1998
Bulldogs Win First Over-Time Match of Season
It took Fresno State seven extra minutes but the Bulldogs defeated San Diego State 1-0, on Sunday. The Bulldogs had several good scoring opportunities during regulation, but failed to convert them. San Diego State goalkeeper Matt Hall shutout the Bulldogs in regulations by making seven saves.
After playing to a draw in the first 90 minutes, the two teams geared up for overtime. Seven minutes into the extra period, midfielder Dana McGregor (Arroyo Grande) headed in a pass from captain Jesse Morgan (Encinitas) to give the Bulldogs the victory. Fresno State has a four-game winning streak against San Diego State. The last Aztec victory came in 1988.
