Stockton - Goalkeeper Jennifer Johnstone came up with two critical saves in the final 15 minutes to preserve a 2-1 Bulldog victory at Pacific?s Stagg Memorial Stadium Sunday night to give Fresno State its first mark in the win column this season.
Johnstone led a defense that time and time again halted the Tiger attack. Pacific?s greatest threat to the Bulldog lead arose in the 73rd minute when Tiger forward Jamee Lucchesi beat the Bulldog defense to fire an open shot from 20 yards out. The ball only found the outreached left arm of Johnstone knocking it safely away from the goal.
The Bulldogs seized an early lead when Reyna Green broke away to find net at 15:54. The Tigers quickly countered with Rebecca Moffitt?s header less than 90 seconds later.
Fresno State took its final lead shortly before halftime when Susan Shivokevich blasted her shot past the Tiger goalkeeper. Both Bulldog goals were assisted by Jill Pearson.
"This was a tremendous win for us," head coach Peter Reynaud said. "Pacific qualified for the NCAA?s last fall and are surely to be in the Top 30 this year. To get this win on their field shows what we can do."
The Bulldogs are currently 1-1, and will see their next action when they visit Cal Poly Saturday.
