TULSA, Okla. - Solid outside shooting by Tulsa and turnovers by Fresno State combined to give the Golden Hurricane a 75-60 victory in front of 1,891 at the Reynolds Center. The loss drops FS to 8-11 (1-4 WAC) while Tulsa improved to 9-9 (5-1).
Tulsa, the surprise team in the conference this year after being picked to finish seventh in the preseason coaches' poll, shot 48 percent on the afternoon, including 13 of 17 from the free throw line. Conversely, the Bulldogs committed a season-high 35 turnovers and shot only five free throws, making two.
Both TU and FS were as cold as the Tulsa weather in the first half. The Golden Hurricane shot 39 percent (12 of 31) in the opening stanza while the Bulldogs came in at 33 percent (10 of 30). Fresno State also committed 18 first half turnovers. Nevertheless, FS trailed by only five at half thanks to 10 points from Amanda Baker and the ability to limit Tulsa's leading scorer, Lila Osceola, to only four first half points.
Fresno State was able to chip away at the Golden Hurricane lead in the second half and took a 37-35 lead with 14 minutes 19 seconds left. But the turning point of the game came at the 12:31 mark when Tiffany Lewis picked up her fourth foul. The Bulldogs led 37-36 at the time. But with Lewis out of the game, Tulsa went on a 14-0 run over the next 2:38 to turn a one-point deficit into a 51-37 lead. The Bulldogs eventually pared the lead down to four with 5:55 left, but the Golden Hurricane's solid outside shooting ? it was 18 of 28 (.536) in the second half ? combined with its own turnovers doomed FS in the end.
For the Bulldogs, Amanda Baker picked up her first career double-double, scoring 19 points while grabbing a career-high 10 rebounds. Porsha Boyd added 11 points off the bench and Tiffany Lewis had 10.
Four Golden Hurricane's scored in double figures, led by Denise Wagner's 17. Kasie Pittman chipped in 15.
The Bulldogs return home for a two-game homestand, which gets underway Thu. at 7 p.m. against San Jose State at the North Gym. FS will take on Hawai'i Sat. at 7 p.m. Ticket information can be obtained by calling the Fresno State Athletics Ticket Office at (559) 278-DOGS.
