FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldogs were defeated by No. 3 San Jose State Spartans (11-0-1, 3-0-0 MPSF-M) on Thursday, Oct. 12, with a score of 4-0.
Fresno State tallied its third-straight loss with the defeat. In addition, the loss marked the first versus the Spartans since 1980. It did not take long for San Jose State to score. With just under ten minutes ticked off the clock, Spartan midfielder Jorge Martinez blasted one from the left side, just hard enough to tip it off of the hands of the Bulldogs' sophomore goalkeeper Jeremy Proud (Auburn, Wash.). Forty seconds later, Spartan midfielder Fausto Villegas connected on a rebounded ball to net the second goal of the match. Two more San Jose State goals would be scored before the first-half was over, allowing the team to sit comfortably at half-time with a 4-0 lead. The Bulldogs were outshot 14-2 in the first-half. In the second-half, the `Dogs increased their attacks by outshooting the Spartans 8-2. Unfortunately, the team was unable to sneak any past the Spartan goalkeeper. Proud recorded three saves on seven shots and senior midfielder Dana McGregor (Arroyo Grande, Calif.) lead the Bulldogs on the attack and finished the match with three shots.
Fresno State falls to 7-4-1 overall and 0-3-0 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation-Mountain conference play. The team looks ahead to another conference match on Sunday, Oct. 15, at Sacramento State at 1 p.m.
