Volleyball Sweeps Past TCU

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State (11-10, 4-3 WAC) made it a tight race in the middle of the Western Athletic Conference standings this evening after sweeping TCU (12-11, 4-3 WAC) with a 15-11, 15-4 and 15-11 victory in the North Gym.
The Bulldogs, who hit .248 in the match, outkilled (55-35) and outblocked (7.5-4.0) TCU with the digging stats almost even (55-52). The 'Dogs got their first sweep over an opponent since Marshall on Sept. 16.
Winning four of its last six games, Fresno State had two Bulldogs tally double-figure kills and three notch double-digit digs in the conference win.
Fresno State was led offensively by its middle blockers in junior Shauna McQuaid and sophomore Lindsay Closs. McQuaid totaled a match-high 15 kills and hit .300 (15-6-30) while adding an assist, three digs and a match-high six total blocks. Closs followed with 13 kills and hit .321 (13-4-28) and posted three assists, two digs and a block.
Defensively, senior defensive specialist Leilua Satele dug a match-high 12 digs to go along with a service ace. Outside hitters Christy Burnett (sophomore) and Stefanie Taelman (freshman) each chipped in 10 digs. Taelman also had three total blocks while senior outside hitter/setter Malia Malu added four blocks.
The win moved Fresno State into a two-way tie for fourth place with the Horned Frogs. In WAC action this evening, first-place Hawai'i (7-0 WAC) swept UTEP on the road, third-place Nevada (5-3 WAC) defeated Rice on the road and second-place San Jose State (6-1 WAC) swept SMU at home.
Fresno State hosts SMU (11-8, 2-5 WAC) tomorrow night, Oct. 21, 7:00 pm, to conclude its four-match homestand.
