Volleyball Swings Past SMU

FRESNO, Calif. - Winning three of its last four home matches, Fresno State (12-10, 5-3 WAC) closed out its four-date homestand with a four-game victory over SMU (15-6, 10-15, 15-11, 15-6) and tightened the race for third place with Nevada in Western Athletic Conference play.
With TCU's four-game loss at San Jose State this evening, the Bulldogs are tied for third with the Wolf Pack at 5-3. However, Nevada travels to UTEP tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 22, for a 1:00 pm match up.
Fresno State, which has been victorious in five of its last seven appearances, posted its highest hitting percentage on the season after hitting .360 (69-15-150) to go along with 53 digs and nine total blocks. Four Bulldogs tallied double-figure kills, three had double-digit digs and one Bulldog, sophomore outside hitter Christy Burnett posted a double-double.
Burnett had 13 kills and 10 digs with two blocks after hitting .294 (13-3-34) on the evening. Junior middle blocker Shauna McQuaid collected a team-high 17 kills and hit .483 (17-3-29) while adding four blocks in the victory.
Sophomore middle blocker Lindsay Closs tallied 14 kills and hit .444 (14-2-27) and had five blocks while freshman outside hitter Stefanie Taelman chipped in 12 kills and hit .310 (12-3-29) with six digs and three blocks.
Senior outside hitter/setter Malia Malu and senior defensive specialist Leilua Satele tied for team-high honors in digs with 11.
SMU's Kelly Klecka led all players in kills (22) and digs (12) while serving up a match-high five service aces. As a team, the Mustangs hit .230 and had four players reach double-digits in kills and two had 10 or more digs.
Fresno State continues WAC action on the road next weekend with just one conference match when they travel north to San Jose State on Saturday, Oct. 28. The 7:30 pm match will be played in the Spartan Gym, not the Event Center as originally scheduled.
