FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State women's soccer returned to their winning ways this afternoon in Bulldog Stadium. Prior to this afternoons match Jill Pearson (Garden Grove, Calif.) and fellow senior Corrine Atkins (Clovis, Calif.) were honored for the achievements on the field during their four year career at Fresno State. Aimee Thompson (Simi Valley, Calif.) was wearing Atkins no.17 jersey in honor of her being unable to play, due to the tear in her left ACL that occurred during practice earlier this season. Atkins had asked head coach Peter Reynaud if one of her teammates could wear her jersey during the final match of the season. Atkins one requirement for the person wearing her jersey was that they played with a lot of heart out on the field. Thompson met the prerequisite that Atkins had set for her by scoring The Bulldogs first goal of the match to tie the it at 1-1. At the end of the match Atkins was very pleased with the way Thompson had played in her no. 17 jersey.
San Diego State scored at the first when Fay DeLeon took a corner kick and delivered a high lofting shot giving her teammate Jane Specht the opportunity to head the ball into the back of the net past the diving Bulldog goalkeeper Mary-tyler Wahl (Rvierside, Calif.). Nineteen minutes later the Bulldogs answered back with a goal of their own. Reyna Green (Modesto, Calif.) dribbled deep into the corner of the field and served a high arcing ball to Thompson who found the back of the net with a spectacular diving header to tie the game at 1-1.
Senior forward Jill Pearson dried the tears from her eyes late in the first half when she scored her first goal in five games. Once again, Green fed Pearson with a cross and from there it was all Pearson on a breakaway past the diving Aztec goalkeeper Erin Haentjens. Pearson's goal gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead at the end of the first half.
Seven minutes in to the second half the Aztecs tied the match at 2-2. Hannah Garl dribbled deep into the corner and fed a high arching ball straight to Nikki Torruella who headed the ball in to the back of the goal. Minutes later, Pearson scored on a breakaway to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead. This was Pearson's 14 goal and her fifth game-winning goal of the season. Late in the second half, Green decided it was her turn to score. Erin Sayegusa (Honolulu, Hawaii) fed Green with a nice cross and Green dribbled around two Aztec defenders to put the ball into the back of the net for the final time during the regular season for the Bulldogs.
The Fresno State women's soccer looks to defend their WAC Championship when they host the WAC Tournament Nov. 2, 3 & 5. The Bulldogs return to action Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. when they face Texas Christian University in the WAC tournament at Bulldog Stadium.
