Volleyball Gets Four-Game Win at UTEP

EL PASO, Texas - Fresno State (9-8, 2-1 WAC)picked up its second straight Western Athletic Conference win on the year after getting a 15-12, 9-15, 15-11 and 15-9 victory on the road at UTEP.
The Bulldogs, who had five players tally double-figure kills and double-figure digs, had three collect a double-double against the Miners. Freshman outside hitter Kara Verwey, who shares match-high honors in kills with junior middle blocker Shauna McQuaid, collected 19 kills and added 11 digs with three aces and two blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Christy Burnett chipped in 12 kills, 10 digs and four blocks while senior outside hitter/setter Malia Malu added 13 kills, 12 digs and four blocks.
McQuaid, who also totaled 19 kills, hit .378 (19-5-37) in the win and had five blocks. At the net, sophomore middle blocker Lindsay Closs had a match-high nine total blocks to lead the way. Sophomore setter Brittney Pearson dished out a season-high 61 assists while collecting four digs and four blocks.
As a team against UTEP, the match statistics were pretty even as the Bulldogs edged the Miners in kills (79-75) and blocks (15-14). Fresno State, which hit .257 in the match, had 11 service aces but were outdug by UTEP 69-64.
The Miners, who had four players in double-digit kills, were led by Jennifer Abbruzzese's 18 kills. Stacy Zimmerman had a double-double for the Miners with 17 kills and 13 digs.
The win over UTEP extended the 'Dogs series lead to 14-0 and broke a three-way tie for third place in the WAC.
Fresno State will take its modest two-match win streak into this Saturday's match at Rice.
