Diving Steps up to the Board
The swim team will take a week off of competing but the divers will compete at the USC Diving Invitational. Freshman divers Nicole Recupito (Kokomo, Ind.) and Rachel Azevedo (Clovis, Calif.) will compete Thu.-Sat., Nov. 16-18. Azevedo will be competing for her third time, and Recupito for her fourth.
Bulldogs' Spotlight
Sophomore Bethany Starkweather (Plano, Texas) has provided a strong base for the `Dogs this season. Starkweather holds the fifth fastest season time for the 1000 freestyle (11:09.73), third fastest in the 200 back (2:12.81), third fastest in the 200 IM (2:15.44) and second fastest in the 400 IM (4:43.14). She has two winning finishes and one third place finish for the season. Another strong swimmer for the Bulldogs this year has been sophomore Holly Calcote (Dinuba, Calif.). Calcote holds the fourth fastest time in the 50 freestyle (:25.45), the fifth fastest time in the 100 freestyle (:55.50), the fastest time in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.69) and the fifth fastest time in the 200 breaststroke (2:43.32). Calcote has two winning finishes and two second place finishes for the season.
Diving Coach ChunHua Zhao
Diving coach ChunHua Zhao (Tianjin Sports College, `85) is in her second year at Fresno State. Last year she guided our lone diver from a local competition level to the NCAA Zone Championship qualification standards. After 10 years of an impressive diving career in China and 19 years of coaching the sport of diving, she first came to the United States in 1997. Upon her arrival, Zhao served as an assistant diving coach at the University of Nevada for two years as well as having been head coach of the Carson Valley Diving Team. A member of the Chinese National Diving Team from 1977-1979, Zhao garnered a gold medal in the 10-meter platform event during the Chinese National Diving competition in 1977.
Busy Weekend for `Dogs
On Friday, Nov. 10, Fresno State defeated Cal Poly 153.5-83.5 and Loyola Marymount 73-21 on Saturday, Nov. 11. The `Dogs won 10 of 13 events against Cal Poly, garnering their fourth consecutive win this season. Senior Summir Case (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) won the 50 freestyle (:25.19) and the 100 freestyle (:54.32). Recupito won her first winning finishes of the season for both her one and three meter dives. First place finishes were also claimed by freshman Greer McGettrick (Studio City, Calif.) in the 1000 freestyle (11:02.84), Julian Hill (Bakersfield, Calif.) in the 200 back (2:08.97), Starkweather in the 500 freestyle (5:15.81) and senior Jennifer Brown (West Hills, Calif.) in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.91). At Loyola Marymount, the Bulldogs won eight of the 12 events. Leading the `Dogs, Starkweather took two winning finishes in the 100 backstroke (1:04.47) and the 1000 freestyle (10:49.66). Hill won the 100 butterfly (1:00.86) and Senior Lena Darnell (Spring Valley, Calif.) won the100 freestyle (:54.73). Other winning finishes were claimed by sophomore Jessica Klenner (Mission Viejo, Calif.) in the 500 freestyle (5:20.13) and Senior Temple Cowden (Redlands, Calif.) in the 200 freestyle (1:58.07).
