FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldogs defeated TCU 3-1 in their first round match of the WAC tournament tonight at Bulldog Stadium. The Bulldogs found their diamond in the rough when Freshman Jackie Jewell (Clovis, Calif.) netted two goals.
Jewell scored her first goal early in the second half when to give the Bulldogs a early 1-0 lead. Junior forward Reyna Green (Modesto, Calif.) dribbled deep into the right corner of the field and lobbed a high arching cross hitting Jewell perfectly in stride. Jewell charged on goal and netted her first post season goal of her Fresno State career at 8:30 in the first half.
Senior Jill Pearson (Garden Grove, Calif.) scored the Bulldogs second goal at 27:47 in the first half. Midfielder Aimee Thompson (Simi Valley, Calif.) dribbled deep into the left corner of the pitch and crossed the ball to Pearson in front of the net. Pearson dribbled around one TCU defender and pelted a shot past the TCU goalkeeper Shannon Wagner. Pearson's goal turned out to be the game-winning goal her sixth of the season. This was Pearson's 15 goal this season and it gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead at the half.
Late in the second half Jewell scored her second goal of the game to give the bulldogs a 3-0 lead. Thompson kicked a high arching cross to Jewell which she settled and drilled past the TCU goalkeeper. This was Jewell's sixth goal of the season giving the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead at the 75 minute mark.
With seven minutes remaining in regulation the TCU Horned Frogs foiled the Bulldogs thought of a possible shutout. The Horned Frogs Sherry Dick dribbled deep into the box and ripped one of her infamous shots past the stunned Fresno State goalkeeper Mary-tyler Wahl (Riverside, Calif.).
Wahl played a spectacular match for the Bulldogs this evening. Wahl had two save on five of the Horned Frogs five shots on goal. Wahl took command of her defensive backfield that played a marvelous match allowing TCU to take only eight shots. Defender Kristi Nicholls (Fresno, Calif.) and midfielder Jessica Peisch (Fresno, Calif.) saved two shots from going into the goal both off TCU corner kicks.
The Bulldogs face No. 2 seed Tulsa Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium in a semi final match of the WAC Tournament.
