FRESNO, Calif. (AP) -Demetrius Porter scored 21 points and Chris Jefferies added 17 to lead Fresno State to a 70-62 non-conference victory against San Diego State Monday night.
Fresno State (3-1) overcame a cold-shooting first half and a 21-point performance by former Bulldog Randy Holcomb to post the victory.
Holcomb, who transferred from Fresno State after his freshman season, scored 12 in the first half and made five of six shot attempts as San Diego State (2-1) took a 28-27 halftime lead.
Melvin Ely and Travis DeManby each added 13 points for Fresno. Myron Epps had 17 for San Diego State.
Fresno State ran off 11-straight points to take a 46-40 lead with 12 minutes left in the game. Jefferies hit a pair of baskets to start the run followed by a three and layup by DeManby and a basket by Ely to cap off the run.
San Diego closed the gap to two points with just over seven minutes left in the game but Porter hit two baskets, including a three and Ely made two free throws to increase the margin to nine points. San Diego never got closer than four the rest of the way.
San Diego State controlled the tempo through most of the first half by dominating the boards and with the help of Fresno s cold shooting.
Fresno State made just three of first 16 shot attempts while being outrebounded 16-5 over the first nine minutes. But San Diego s biggest lead was points, the last time at 26-21 with two minutes left in the half.
A free throw by Shannon Swillis followed by a three-pointer from Jefferies and a steal and a layup by Demetrius Porter, gave Fresno a one-point lead. But a diving layup by Deandre Moore just before the buzzer gave San Diego the halftime lead.
