FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State handed out its volleyball postseason awards at its annual awards banquet held at TorNino's this afternoon.
Junior middle blocker Shauna McQuaid (San Diego, Calif.) came away with four individual honors after being selected as the Bulldogs' "Best Offensive Player" and "co-Most Valuable Player" as well as being given the "Sally Adley Coaches" and "Academic Excellence" awards.
With career-high 411 kills, McQuaid gave Fresno State its 11th straight year in which a Bulldog has tallied 400 or more kills in a season. Ranked every week in the Western Athletic Conference in hitting percentage, kills and blocks this past season, McQuaid was the 'Dogs top kill leader in 19 of 27 matches played.
McQuaid, who missed three matches in late September with an abdominal strain, finished the season with double-figure kills in her last seven matches and 14 in her last 15. She also tallied 10 or more kills in 24 of 27 matches overall during the 2000 campaign. Posting a team-best .288 hitting percentage, she averaged 3.81 kills per game and finished second on the team in total blocks with 121 for a 1.12 block per game average.
The 6-1 speech communications major picked up her second 20-kill match of her career in the Brion's Grille/Patriot Invitational championship match with a season-high 20 against George Mason. Named to two all-tournament teams this past season (Brion's Grille/Patriot Invitational and 14th Annual Fresno State Invitational), McQuaid notched her first career double-double against Rice in WAC action with 18 kills and career-high 12 digs.
McQuaid etched her name in the school's single-season recordbooks after collecting 121 total blocks -- ninth best -- and averaging 3.16 kills a game that ranks eighth-best in a Bulldog season.
Finishing as one of the top two offensive and defensive players in kills and blocks the last two seasons, McQuaid has been a starter for just two years. She already ranks in five all-time career categories at Fresno State in blocks per game (No. 4, 1.02 bpg), hitting efficiency (No. 5, .285), kills per game (No. 8, 3.16 kpg), block assists (No. 9, 171) and total blocks (No. 11, 217).
Senior outside hitter/setter Malia Malu (Torrance, Calif.) shared co-MVP honors with McQuaid and also was given the "Best Defensive Player" award. A four-year starter with the Bulldogs, Malu netted a career-best 83 total blocks as a senior. One of four Bulldogs to play in all 30 matches this past year, she picked up her first career all-tournament honors at the 2000 Denver Invitational.
In her career, Malu tallied 45 career double-figure dig matches and 11 double-doubles. She concluded her career ranked in six all-time school records: No. 6 block assists (219), No. 8 digs (933), No. 8 digs per game (2.47), No. 8 total blocks (235), No. 10 blocks per game (0.62) and No. 10 assists (618).
Freshman setter Chelsey Duley (Tollhouse, Calif.) was the recipient of the "Most Improved Player" award. Stepping into a regular starting position towards the end of the season, Duley managed to average 10.4 assists per game in just 71 of 119 games this season. Missing the first six matches of WAC action due to a patella tendon strain and sitting out the final four game after hurting her ankle against TCU in the season finale, Duley had a season-best 61 assists against CS Fullerton and season-high 16 digs against then No. 19 and NCAA Tournament participant Santa Clara. Recording at least one block in 18 of 24 matches -- only seeing significant time in 21 matches -- she hit .242, dished out 720 assists, had 123 digs and recorded 35 total blocks.
