LOS ANGELES - Loyola Marymount shot 52 percent and had five players score in double figures on its way to a 85-63 victory over Fresno State at Gersten Pavilion. The loss drops FS's record to 2-3 while LMU improves to 4-2, its best start since the 1995-96 season.
Loyola Marymount began the game on fire, taking a 10-0 lead by the 17:15 mark. But the Bulldogs battled back with a 12-4 run of their own to cut the lead to 14-12. However, the Lions responded with yet another run, this one being 17-4, which put them up for the remainder of the game. At the half, LMU led 45-31. It was the most points FS has allowed in a first half since giving up 47 to Hawai'i on Feb. 27, 1999.
Fresno State's fortunes were hampered in the first minute of play when Channan High picked up two immediate fouls. Without High's inside presence, Loyola Marymount was able to shoot 55 percent in the opening stanza. The Bulldogs also hurt themselves with 12 first half turnovers. High would eventual foul out with 7:16 left in the contest.
The second half didn't get any better for the Bulldogs. The Lions jumped ahead by 20 points at the 15:40 mark on a jumper by Britton. After an FS turnover, Kate Murray hit a three-pointer to extend the advantage to 61-38 with 12:48 remaining. From there, Loyola Marymount never looked back, holding at least a 21-point lead the remainder of the game.
Britton led all scorers with 19 points. She also added a team-high six rebounds. Adrianne Slaughter chipped in 17 on a school-record 7-of-7 shooting. Fresno State was led by Laura Garica, who had 13. Lindsay Logan had 12, the fifth time in five games she has scored in double figures.
Next up for Fresno State is a trip to Tucson, Ariz., for the Arizona Basketball Classic. The Bulldogs will play Bowling Green on Saturday at 4 p.m. in their first game of the tournament.
