SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Fresno State scored early and often in game two of Saturday's doubleheader and posted a sweep of Santa Clara, 16-3. The Bulldogs ran their winning streak to five games and improved to 5-2 on the season, while the Broncos dropped their fourth consecutive contest and fell to 2-6.
The Bulldogs scored four runs in the first inning, two in the second and four in the sixth to take a commanding 9-1 lead. They plated five runs in the eighth and a single tally in the ninth to complete their scoring.
Fresno State's offense exploded for 20 hits off five Santa Clara pitchers, including three doubles and Anthony Acevedo's (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif.) sixth-inning, three-run home run, his first of the season. Brandon Gemoll (So., San Jose, Calif.) continued his hot hitting, going 4-for-5 with a run scored and three RBIs. It was the third time in the past five games Gemoll has had four hits in a game, a career high. Tom Crieghton (So., Weldon, Calif.) once again provided a spark from the lead off spot, going 3-for-4 with a double, two walks and three runs scored. Josh Labandeira (Jr., Porterville, Calif.) had one of his best days as a Bulldog, going 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Acevedo added a pair of hits, scored three runs and tied his career high with four RBIs. Tony Guzman (Jr., Clovis, Calif.) was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored.
Starting pitcher Shawn Hannah (Sr., Clovis, Calif.) was solid on the mound, limiting the Broncos to two runs on five hits in his seven innings of work. Hannah (1-1) walked two and struck out four. Nick Moran (So., Elk Grove, Calif.) tossed the final two innings in relief of Hannah, allowing one run and striking out two.
"I was pleased with Shawn's performance," Fresno State head coach Bob Bennett said. "He went to almost 100 pitches and still looked good out there. He is getting stronger and becoming more effective for us. He consistently kept the ball down today and had good enough stuff to be overpowering at times.
"I thought the pitching did a good job today," Bennett said. "We scored enough runs in the first game to get Smith the win in relief. Gemoll hit very well, especially in the second game. He is hotter than a pistol right now. I thought we got some key hits in the second game, especially from Garcia. We also played very well defensively."
The two teams will play the final game of the three-game set Sunday afternoon. Fresno State will send left-hander Beau Hintz (So., Stockton, Calif.) to the mound. Hintz will bring a 1-0 record into the contest. Santa Clara will counter with right-hander Camden Kelley (0-2). First pitch at Buck Shaw Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
