FRESNO, Calif. - Two local standouts and two outside the Golden State have signed their national letter of intent to play volleyball for the Fresno State Bulldogs as announced by head coach Lindy Vivas.
Kara Verwey (Kerman), Carrie Hartt (Manteca), Kristen Fenton (Marysville, Mich.) and Taneisha Tilque (Spokane, Wash.) comprise the 2000 Bulldog volleyball class to date.
A two-time Fresno Bee all-star team selection, Verwey comes to Fresno State as one of the top volleyball athletes in the Valley. The 6-1 outside hitter led Kerman High School to its second straight Division 4-section title this past season. Leading the Lions to their first state tournament match, Verwey recorded 49 kills in 10 games in postseason play as a senior. This four-time first team All-North Sequoia League pick garnered league MVP honors her last two years. Also a standout with the KHS basketball team who was named the school's underclassman of the year as a freshman and sophomore, she has been on the school's honor roll and is interested in studying sports medicine at Fresno State next fall. Verwey plays club ball with the Central Cal Volleyball Club.
Hartt, who is the second Bulldog out of Manteca to come in as a freshman under Vivas, was a three-year varsity starter for East Union High School. The 6-2 middle blocker was named team MVP her last three years as she led the team in kills (266) and blocks (129) last fall. Ranking among the top three in the area in kills and blocks the last two years, Hartt was selected to the Modesto Bee's "Fab Five" in 1999. She was named to the Modesto Bee and Stockton Record's All-District Teams as a junior and senior. A Who's Who Among America High School Students, Hartt received an academic award for excellence in biology as well as being a recipient of the San Joaquin sections excellence in athletics award in her prep career. Having played for the Delta Valley Volleyball Club the last six years, Hartt led that team to a Northern California Championship title in 1999. She is interested in majoring in English at Fresno State.
As the first Michigan native to ink with the Bulldog volleyball program, Fenton has been a two-time first team all-state selection. However, this future Bulldog is still in the midst of her senior season at Marysville High School with the season beginning in December and running through the end of March. Having led the Vikings to a current 206-1 record as of Feb. 3 (57-0, 1997, 59-0, 1998, 58-0, 1999, and 32-1 in 2000) her team is the top-ranked B school in the state of Michigan. The 5-10 outside hitter, who has led MHS to three state championship crowns, currently holds the school's career records in best attack percentage serve reception percentage and kill percentage. Fenton, who is a two-time McComb Area All-Conference pick, is currently hitting .478 on the season with a team-high 220 kills and 36 total blocks. Fenton played club ball with the Marysville AAU and one year for Blue Water Volleyball Club.
As the second straight player out of Spokane, Tilque joins sophomore Lindsay Closs as the representatives from the great northwest. Out of Rogers High School, Tilque is a 6-0 middle blocker who played club ball with Closs with the Spokane Splash Volleyball Club.
"There's a lot of talent in this recruiting class," said head coach Lindy Vivas. "This incoming group is as good as we've ever had as a true freshmen class. Each one is athletic and plays and understands her position well. They all bring a lot of experience from the club level in addition to their high school career. All four should have an immediate impact and we expect them to have successful careers at Fresno State. They have all demonstrated what it means to be a successful student-athlete."
