FRESNO, Calif. - A 14-3 run over the final 7 minutes 50 seconds of the game helped Hawai'i to a 48-44 victory over Fresno State before an enthusiastic crowd at the North Gym. The loss drops FS's record to 9-12 (2-5 WAC). UH improves to 15-5 (7-1 WAC).
The Bulldogs had the lead and momentum at the media timeout at the 7:50 mark, but they managed to shoot just 1 of 12 for the rest of the game. Nonetheless, Fresno State trailed only 45-44 with 1:43 left. After the two teams traded turnovers, the Bulldogs had the ball with 1:06 left on the clock. Tiffany Lewis missed a layup, but Channan High got the rebound and FS reset its offense. With 34 seconds left, Lindsay Logan found herself open for a jumper, but it wouldn't fall. Hawai'i got the rebound, made three of its four free throws and ended up escaping the North Gym with a victory.
Defense was the key to the game for both teams. The Rainbow Wahine shot only 42 percent in the contest and committed 21 turnovers, including 10 by the WAC's leading scorer Raylene Howard. The Bulldogs didn't shoot any better, hitting on only 35 percent of their shots.
Lewis led Fresno State with 15 points and seven rebounds. Logan added eight assists and moved into ninth-place on FS's single-season assist list with 140. She is the only freshman among the top 10 in that category.
Kate McMeeken-Ruscoe, Dainora Puida and Howard all had 10 for Hawai'i. Kylie Galloway and Hedy Liu had 10 boards each.
Fresno State has one more game left on the current homestand, taking on UTEP Saturday at 7 p.m. at the North Gym. The audio portion of the broadcast will be available on www.gobulldogs.com.
