FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State rode the left arm of starting pitcher Beau Hintz (So., Stockton, Calif.) to a 6-2 victory Sunday afternoon at Pete Beiden Field. The Bulldogs completed the three-game sweep of the Waves and improved to 3-2 for the season. Pepperdine's record dropped to 1-5.
Hintz, making his first start of the season and the third of his career, tossed his first career complete game. He allowed two runs on five hits, walked five and struck out seven in the 116-pitch performance. Hintz (1-0) shut out Pepperdine for 8.1 innings before allowing the two runs in the ninth.
"Beau really looked great today," Fresno State head coach Bob Bennett said. "He looked like a seasoned veteran out there. He never really labored and his delivery was nice and easy all day. I really was rooting for him to get the shutout.
"He did a great job of mixing his pitches, had good control and established the strike zone early in the game. He kept their hitters off rhythm with his off-speed stuff and didn't really get behind in the count much."
The Bulldogs gave Hintz a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on Anthony Acevedo's (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif.) RBI double, scored four more in the sixth on three hits and added an insurance run in the eighth on Brandon Gemoll's (So., San Jose, Calif.) first home run of the season. They pounded out 12 hits on the afternoon.
For the second consecutive day, eight of the nine Bulldog starters had at least one hit. Gemoll paced the offense by tying his career high with four hits, a personal best set on Friday night. He also scored a pair of runs and drove in one. Nick Garcia (Jr., Lakewood, Calif.) was 2-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI. Brad Harper (So., Madera, Calif.) drove in two runs with a sixth-inning double.
"We did a good job offensively today," Bennett said. "We struggled a bit early but came through when we needed to. We had several key hits today. Brandon did very well, Garcia had a pair of clutch hits and Harper had a key double."
Pepperdine starter Jay Adams (0-2) picked up the loss. Adams scattered seven hits in his four innings of work, allowing only one run. Stephen Correa relieved Adams in the fifth and allowed five runs on five hits in his 3.1 innings of work.
Fresno State plated 27 runs and hit an even .400 (42-for-105) with six doubles and one home run in the three-game sweep. On the mound, Bulldog pitchers limited Pepperdine to 10 runs (3.00 ERA) and a .225 (23-for-102) batting average.
The Bulldogs return to action on Friday, Feb. 11, when it travels to Santa Clara to begin a three-game series against the Broncos. It will be the Bulldogs first road trip of the season. First pitch at Buck Shaw Stadium is slated for 2 p.m.
