No. 7 Bulldog Softball Gets Stung

Out of focus, Fresno State fell victim to its own mental and physical errors as CS Northridge stunned the No. 7 Bulldogs 3-1 in the first round of bracket play. With the loss, the 'Dogs fall into the consolation bracket and plays UNLV tonight at 7 p.m. to end their appearance in the Kia Klassic. The Matadors, who come to Fresno for a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, March 23, 6:00 p.m., earned the right to face the No. 2 Arizona Wildcats in the quarterfinals.
At 2-2 in tournament play, Fresno State got one run on five hits and committed an error while CSUN scored three runs on five hits and had two errors in the win. Sophomore lefty Kristen Hunter endured her third straight loss in as many starts as she gave up one earned run (home run), walked one and struck out four to go to 7-6 on the season.
Senior first baseman Angela Cervantez was a bright spot in the game after going 2-2 with a double and a RBI. Becky Witt, Vanessa Czarnecki and Pam West were the other Bulldogs who got a hit. The Matadors got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the first and added another in the fourth and fifth. Fresno State scored its lone run in the sixth after threatening in the third and fourth innings. At 23-9 on the season, Fresno State's eight losses were to either the No. 1, 2 or 3 team in the country until today.
