Bulldogs Head To Modesto Relays
Fresno State will head to the Modesto Relay this Saturday, May 13, in Modesto, Calif. The Bulldogs follow that up with the WAC championships in El Paso, Texas, May 19-20.
Cal/Nevada Championships Recap
The Bulldogs scored 34.5 points and finished eighth at the Cal/Nevada Championships, held in Berkeley, Calif. UCLA won the event by notching 114 points, beating out second place California, which had 86. Several Bulldogs placed high in their respective events, including Kayla Russum (So., Lake Stevens, Wash.), who was second in the javelin with a throw of 147-06. Jynette Grayson-Reed (Jr., Stockton, Calif.) ran a season-best 54.64 in the 400 meters en route to a third place finish. Brooke Lankard (So., Visalia, Calif.) was also impressive, finishing fifth in the pole vault with a 12-3 1/2.
Bauer Victorious In Easter Heptathlon
Sophomore Rachel Bauer (So., Clovis,Calif.) won the annual Easter Heptathlon last week, scoring a total of 4,309 points. On the first day, Bauer led after one event, capturing first place in the 100-meter hurdles. But Laura Swanson of Occidental College gave Bauer some stiff competition. Bauer won the 200 meters and trailed Swanson by 20 points at the end of the first day. Then on the second day, Bauer recaptured the lead with a winning mark in the javelin as she posted a personal-best 110-7. She sealed the victory with a solid time in the 800 meters.
USTCA Invitational Recap
The Bulldogs found the competition to be very tough at the first annual United States Track Coaches Association National Invitational Team Championship as the team placed 14th. Junior Jynette Grayson-Reed (Jr., Stockton, Calif.) improved her season-best mark in the preliminaries of the 400 meters with a mark of 55.56. The 4 x 100 relay team improved its season-best time to 47.13. Senior pole vaulter Aleyna Tomate (Sr., Camarillo, Calif.) improved her career-best height in the vault to 11-9 3/4 as she placed ninth in the event. Freshman Crystal Simmons (Fr., Barstow, Calif.) improved her career-best mark in the long jump to 19-3 1/2. She took fifth in the triple jump, recording a personal-best 41-8 3/4 which now ranks second on Fresno State's all-time list. Sophomore Kayla Russum (So., Lake Stevens, Wash.) placed fifth in the javelin, recording a personal-best 151-1, a mark that now ranks ninth on Fresno State's all-time list.
Bulldogs To Compete In Cal/Nevada Championships
The Bulldogs will head north to Berkeley, Calif. for the seventh annual Cal/Nevada Championships. Last season the team finished fourth overall. Grayson-Reed and sophomore sprinter Dwanice Williams (Modesto, Calif.) were half of the 4 x 400 relay team that took second at the meet. As a freshman, Russum took third in the javelin and Grayson Reed took third in the 400 meters.
