FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State got their second straight shutout by defeating Weber State 7-0 this afternoon at Bulldog Stadium.
The Bulldogs scored early and often with four goals in the first half and three more early in the second. Junior forward Morgan Oliveira (Lemoore, Calif.) scored the `Dogs' first goal two minutes into the match. Oliveira received a beautiful cross from senior forward Jill Pearson (Garden Grove, Calif.) and then proceeded to knock it past the goalkeeper from five feet out. Just four minutes later at the 6-minute mark, Pearson scored the first of four goals she would score on the day. Pearson received a nice lead pass from junior midfielder Aimee Thompson (Simi Valley, Calif.) that she put past Weber State's junior goalkeeper Meagan Thunell. Two minutes later at the 8-minute mark, Pearson netted her second goal on a breakaway shooting it passed the charging Wildcat goalkeeper. Pearson scored her third for a hat trick at the 13-minute mark. Junior forward Reyna Green (Modesto, Calif.) fed Pearson with a stellar cross that she took straight to the goal on a breakaway. Weber State held the Bulldogs scoreless for the remaining 32 minutes of the first half.
Green added the `Dogs' fifth goal early in the second half by tapping a shot past the diving wildcat goalkeeper into the lower right corner of the goal. Six minutes later Thompson led Pearson with a nice lob that she shot passed Thunell for her fourth and final goal of the game. Green capped off the Bulldogs scoring barrage at 62:52 off a cross from Pearson that she pelted past the out stretched diving Wildcat goalkeeper. Once again the Weber State Wildcats held the Fresno State Bulldogs scoreless for the remaining 28 minutes of the match. Weber State goalkeeper Meagan Thunell had 10 saves on 21 Fresno State shots while allowing seven goals. For the Fresno State Bulldogs sophomore goalkeeper Mary-tyler Wahl (Riverside) registered her second shutout of the weekend and her fourth on the season. Weber State had 5 shots and Wahl had 4 saves. Fresno State improves its record to 5-3, while Weber State falls to 0-7.
Fresno State heads East this coming weekend to face Colgate and Cornell for their first ever meeting with either school. On Friday Sept. 22 at 4 p.m. (ET) the Bulldogs face the Big Red of Cornell, and on Sunday Sept. 24 at noon (ET) the Bulldogs face the Red Raiders of Colgate.
