Volleyball Suffers Fifth Loss in Seven Matches

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State (7-5) has been struggling of late and the three-game loss (9-15, 8-15, 4-15) to the University of San Diego on Thursday, Sept. 21, has the Bulldogs reeling.
Losing five of its last seven matches after starting the year out at 5-0, Fresno State was overpowered in every stat category. The Toreros outkilled (63-55), outdug (60-43) and outblocked (11-4) the Bulldogs. USD also hit a torrid .346 (63-16-136) with four aces while Fresno State mustered a .148 (55-31-162) hitting percentage while adding one ace. The Bulldogs also shot themselves in the foot after collecting 14 service errors.
The two bright spots for Fresno State was sophomore outside hitter Christy Burnett and freshman outside hitter Kara Verwey. Burnett was the only Bulldog and one of two players in the match to post a double-double with team-highs 17 kills and 10 digs. Verwey chipped in 13 kills and added eight digs.
USD was paced by sophomore outside hitter Noel Frohman who had a match-high 24 kills. Senior outside hitter Adrian Frediani notched a double-double with 12 kills and a match-high 15 digs. Junior middle blocker Lindsey Lampert added 10 digs while sophomore middle blocker Bridget Merritt netted 10 blocks and had eight kills.
Fresno State hosts No. 19 Santa Clara tomorrow night at 7:00 pm. In the morning, Santa Clara will meet Southeast Missouri State at 10:00 am. San Diego will hit the court again to battle SEMO in a 3:00 pm match up.
The Bulldogs will close out their non-conference schedule at home on Saturday, Sept. 23, with a 1:00 pm match against Southeast Missouri State.
