FRESNO, Calif. - Four years ago senior Leilua Satele walked-on to the Fresno State volleyball team and earned a spot as a defensive specialist. Now in her senior year she can't believe how fast her college career has gone by.
"When I came to Fresno State I just wanted to continue to play volleyball. I love the game and I was willing to work hard," Satele said. "I faced a lot of challenges in the beginning but it's been a lot of fun."
Satele, a native of Long Beach, chose Fresno State first for its physical therapy program and secondly for the proximity to home. When she arrived at Fresno State in the fall of 1997 she realized that she was not yet ready to give up playing the sport.
In her freshman season Satele had an immediate impact on the Bulldog defense and was valuable in adding depth to the lineup. During her sophomore campaign she was the top reserve for the Bulldogs playing in 90 of 107 games and totaling 112 digs. Last year she was one of only two Bulldogs to play in all 98 games and recorded 218 digs while earning second-team all WAC honors.
Satele's impact on the team is not just measured in her defense but also in her role as a team leader. As just one of five upperclassmen, Satele sees herself as a teacher to the newcomers. Through actions and words No. 4 helps keep the Bulldogs together on the court. Satele is one of the most vocal Bulldogs -- encouraging all of teammates every time she enters the game or stands on the sidelines. "It's a lot more responsibility but it's not a burden. I like the role I am able to play this season," Satele said.
As for her last season of play Satele is confident in her teammates and expects this season to be a good one. "It's bittersweet realizing that this is my last season but this year will be awesome with this team."
After graduation she plans to earn her master's degree in physical therapy and rehabilitation and then return to Long Beach to pursue her career. But first she is looking forward to one last season of volleyball.
