Cross Country Has Weekend Off Before WAC Championships

Cross country travels to Honolulu, Hawaii, for the 2001 WAC Championships. Race day is Saturday, Oct. 27.
Men's News
CAL POLY INVITATIONAL
Men's cross country took fourth place with 141 points at the Cal Poly Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 13. Cal Poly won the men's 8K race with 48 points. California took second with 93 points and Southern Utah took third with 103 points. Junior Roberto Vaca (Sanger, Calif.) finished first for the Bulldogs, placing 11th with a time of 27:35. Junior Roosevelt Cook (Oakhills, Calif.) took second on the team, 20th overall, with a time of 27:55. Junior Josh Roddy (Manteca, Calif.) finished third on the team, 27th overall, with a time of 28:10.
STANFORD INVITATIONAL
The men's team took ninth place with 297 points at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., on Saturday, Sept. 28. The Bulldogs improved five places upon last year's 14th place finish. Junior Cook finished first for the `Dogs, taking 37th overall with a time of 26:17. Junior Vaca was second on the team, 57th overall, with a time of 26:44. A total of 28 teams and 198 men ran in the 8K event. Stanford won the race with 30 points.

WOMEN PLACE FIFTH AT CAL POLY INVITATIONAL
The Fresno State women's cross country team took fifth place with 131 points at the Cal Poly Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 13. Cal Poly won the women's 5K race with 43 points. Track West was second with 54, Southern Utah was third with 91 and Cal State Northridge was fourth with 109. Junior Olga Gutierrez (Visalia, Calif.) took first on the team, finishing fifth overall at 18:45. Sophomores Kara and Michelle June (Santa Maria, Calif.) took 17th and 18th, respectively. Kara June beat her older sister by one second with a time of 19:36.
FRESNO STATE WINS SAN FRANCISCO STATE INVITATIONAL
The women's team won its second meet of the season Oct. 6. The Bulldogs took first place at the San Francisco State Invitational at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Fresno State totaled 34 points in the 6K race. Sonoma State took second with 68 points and Cal State Stanislaus took third with 69 points. Four Bulldogs finished in the Top-10, and all five scoring runners finished in the Top-15. Junior Olga Gutierrez (Visalia, Calif.) took second with a time of 22:07.5. Sophomore Kara June (Santa Maria, Calif.) finished third at 22:11.4. Junior Stacy Esquivel (Visalia, Calif.) came in next on the team. Esquivel finished seventh with a time of 22:55.2. Sophomore Michelle June took eighth with a time of 22:58.2. Senior Rachel Bauer (Clovis, Calif.) took 15th with a time of 23:20.8.
UC DAVIS
The women's cross country team took third place with 132 points at the Aggie Open on Saturday, Sept. 22, in Davis, Calif. Host school UC Davis won the women's 5K event. 22 teams and 227 women competed in the race. Sophomore Kara June crossed the finish line first for the Bulldogs, coming in eighth with a time of 18:26.3. Senior Gutierrez was second on the team, 11th overall, with a time of 18:32.3. Rounding out Fresno State's top three was sophomore Michelle June who finished 29th with a time of 19:07.8.
