FRESNO, Calif. - Picture a young woman lying on the ground, wrapped in a blanket with eyes glued to the television watching the San Jose Sharks.
This is Fresno State volleyball player Carrie Hartt, a sophomore middle blocker for the Bulldogs. She saw her first Stanley Cup two years ago and has been hooked ever since a friend introduced Hartt to hockey and the San Jose Sharks. That introduction has yielded a competitive spirit that drives Hartt. It is not only reflected in volleyball but also in her love for hockey.
"I love to see players check people," Hartt said. "It's fun to see them slam people to the ground."
"I love to block balls and watch the ball fly back over the net, too," Hartt added. "It's not hockey but keeping the opponent off balance works for me." Quenching that hockey appetite, Hartt and her brother plays roller hockey in their Manteca neighborhood.
Hartt's brother understands her obsession with hockey and she has turned her parents into fans also. When San Jose Shark games are on the television, "family time" is "hockey time" around the television set.
"My dad likes golf, but I have taught him all the rules about hockey," Hartt said.
When games are on, Hartt has a ritual that she follows. She must have her blanket, her San Jose Sweatshirt, a Sprite and trusty puck by her side to give the Sharks luck. She watches the pre-game show, the game and the post-game show. "I want to bring the game to me," Hartt said. "I yell at the players and tell them what to do. Afterwards, I make sure I check out e-mails that contain team information and statistics."
Bringing the game to her has Hartt wanting to make an impact for the Bulldogs. Watching big hits has Hartt wanting to make big blocks for the Bulldogs. Turning her obsession with hockey into an obsession for the Bulldogs to be successful has Hartt checking off victories.
