FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State used a different offensive weapon to wrap up its non-conference slate and CS Northridge was the recipient of a rejuvenated Bulldog attack.
The Bulldog volleyball team dished out a season-high 11 service aces and handed the Matadors a 30-24, 30-27 and 30-20 loss as Fresno State improved to 10-1 at home.
Fresno State's 11 service aces came most in part to junior outside hitter Christy Burnett, who served up a career-high five aces as the 'Dogs went 6-3 in non-conference matches this season.
Senior middle blocker Shauna McQuaid collected a match-high 11 kills while adding eight digs and four blocks. Junior middle blocker Java Johnson hit .444 (9-1-18) while sophomore outside hitter Taneisha Tilque, who got the starting nod after freshman outside hitter Kristen Fenton went home to attend a family emergency, hit .400 (9-3-15) in her first start of the season. Sophomore outside hitter Kara Verwey also had nine kills for the Bulldogs.
"This was a nice recovery," head coach Lindy Vivas said. "We were more focused, more aggressive and more competitive than our previous match against Hawai'i. We got ready to play and we had some nice things happen for us. I thought Taneisha [Tilque] did a nice job. She passed well, stepped up her hitting and we didn't miss a beat with her in the line up. In addition to her service aces, I also thought Christy [Burnett] had an overall exceptional match in her serving game.
"We close out our home schedule with San Jose State this Saturday," Vivas added. "They have received votes from the coaches' poll this season and they are ranked No. 9 in our [West] region. This is a big match for us and a chance to make some noise in our region. We will need to play at a higher level and produce positive results in every aspect of the game."
Fresno State's 10 home wins this season are the most tallied by a Bulldog team since 1997. The 10 home court victories also marks the fourth time under Vivas in which the 'Dogs have tallied 10 or more wins in the North Gym (1994, 1995, 1997, 2001). Playing in the North Gym for the 140th time under Vivas, the Bulldogs now own a 94-46 (.670) home court record in 11 seasons.
Still further, the Bulldogs will look to tie a school mark for most home wins this weekend. In 1995 the 'Dogs set the school's record for most home victories with 11 (the previous record was nine in 1984). The 'Dogs will attempt to tie that record this weekend as well as move up in the Western Athletic Conference race when they meet San Jose State.
Fresno State concludes its 2001 home schedule on Saturday with a 7:00 p.m. WAC match against the Spartans, who sit in second place in the Western division.
