FRESNO, Calif. - Miami University of Ohio got off to an early two run lead that the Bulldogs could not battle back from, before 2,714 at Pete Beiden Field. Junior right-handed pitcher Francisco Nieves (Jr., Oakland, Calif.) pitched a solid game for the Bulldogs striking out a season high seven batters in 7 innings of work, but came up on the losing end of things tonight dropping his record to 3-1. For the Miami RedHawks Judd Richardson gets the win improving his record to 1-0, while Billy Kieninger entered the game in the eighth to relieve Richardson to post his first save of the season. Richardson and Kieninger together only struck out seven Bulldogs, while Nieves and Beau Hintz (Jr., Stockton, Calif.) struck out 11 RedHawks.
The RedHawks scored one run in the first and one in the fourth to put the Bulldogs away. In the first with a runner on second and one out Clark Mace hit his first triple of the season to score Brady Nori giving Miami University a 1-0 lead at the end of one. The RedHawks added their winning run in the fourth with one out and runners on first and second designated hitter Tom Yost doubled to score Mace from second giving the RedHawks a 2-0 lead at the end of the top of the fourth.
The Bulldogs best effort for a comeback came in the seventh inning when the Bulldogs scored one run and the bases were loaded with two outs for Tom Creighton (Jr., Weldon, Calif.). Fresno State scored when with one out and Josh Labandeira (Sr., Porterville, Calif.) on first Brad Harper (Jr., Madera, Calif.) stepped to the plate and singled to advance Labandeira to third. Labandeira later scored on a passed ball cutting the RedHawks lead to one run. With the bases loaded and two outs Creighton grounded out to the first baseman that tossed it to the pitcher covering the bag, but Creighton's slide into first almost beat the ball, but that was not how the first base ump saw it and called him out ending the Bulldogs promising inning. Kieninger entered the game in the eighth for the RedHawks and finished the Bulldogs off.
Fresno State and Miami University of Ohio will meet again Sunday at 1 p.m. in the friendly confines of Pete Beiden Field.
