Bulldog Baseball Mauls New Mexico 9-3

FRESNO, Calif. - In the Bulldogs second game of the 23rd Annual Pepsi Johnny Quik Classic Shortstop Josh Lanbandeira (Sr., Porterville, Calif.) and right-handed pitcher Bob Runyon (Jr., Atwater, Calif.) showed the Lobos why they are the 2000 Classic defending champions, before 2, 976 this evening at Pete Beiden Field. Labandeira went 2-for-3 with 4 RBI and one run scored, while Runyon pitched a complete game striking out a Bulldog career high nine batters. Runyon improves his record to 1-0 while the Lobos Mike Semprevivo falls to 1-1 on the season. In the bottom of the first, Tom Creighton (Jr., Weldon, Calif.) led off with a double into left center to get the ball rolling for Fresno State. Two batters later with runners on first and second Labandeira hit his sixth home run of the season to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead at the end of the first inning.
Fresno State added one run in the bottom of the second to increase their lead to 4-0. Creighton singled to the wall in left center to score Dan Young (Sr., Orange, Calif.) from second giving the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead.
In the third, Brad Harper (Jr., Madera, Calif.) doubled to score Casey McGehee (Fr., Aptos, Calif.) giving Fresno State a 5-0 lead at the end of three.
The Bulldogs scoring spree continued with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. In the bottom of the fourth, with Creighton on first and Young on second Oscar Lopez (Sr., San Diego) lined out to second baseman and on an errant throw Creighton advanced to third and Young scored. The following batter, Labandeira hit a high sacrifice fly into center for Creighton who tagged up to score. In the fifth, Brandon Gemoll (Jr., San Jose, Calif.) hit his sixth home run of the season giving Fresno State an 8-1 lead going into the top of the sixth.
The Bulldogs added their final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh when Tony Guzman (Clovis, Calif.) doubled to score Dave Hafiz (So., Woodburry, Calif.) from first giving Fresno State a 9-1 lead.
The Lobos tried to comeback in the top of the ninth when they scored two runs cutting the Bulldogs margin of victory to six runs. Fresno State has won its last five out of six games improving its record to 17-8, while New Mexico falls to 10-17 on the season.
The Bulldogs will face No. 9 Notre Dame in their third game of the Pepsi Johnny Quik Classic at 7 p.m. in the friendly confines of Pete Beiden Field.
