TUCSON, Ariz. - No. 14 Fresno State took a hard lesson from second-ranked Arizona when the Wildcats pinned a 9-1, five-inning loss on the Bulldogs to extend their home winning streak to 33 games.
Arizona, which improved to 23-0 at home this season, scored a run in the first and second innings before tacking on two in the third, three in the fourth, and two more in the fifth as the Wildcats collected 10 hits in the non-conference opener.
Trailing 1-0, Fresno State tied the game at one run a piece in the top of the second innings. Junior third baseman Lindsay Fossatti led the inning off with a single to left field. After getting the next Bulldog to strike out, senior shortstop Alicia Dowland reached base on a fielder's choice and Fossatti advanced to second and was safe when the Wildcat shortstop did not touch second. Freshman pitcher Lori Hoffman then delivered a RBI double down the right field line to score Fossatti.
However, the Wildcats pitcher Jennie Finch (17-0) would give up just one more hit to the Bulldogs as Arizona notched its 42nd win on the season.
Finch was supported by four Arizona home runs as Lauren Bauer led the hit parade after going 3-3 with three runs, four RBI and a pair of long balls.
Making her eighth start against a Top 25 team, Hoffman took the loss and fell to 8-8 on the year.
