TULSA, Okla. - Fresno State and Tulsa were able to get started on time but severe lightning and thunderstorms that rushed through the midwest washed out the Western Athletic Conference doubleheader this afternoon.
The Bulldogs, who jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and Tulsa were forced to wait out one hour of lightning. The rain then followed, sheets of rain at one point, which forced the two teams to take shelter again. Waiting out the thunderstorm which moved across the Oklahoma sky as quickly as 60 mph, both teams were at the field at 4:30 pm in hopes of resuming the game at 5:00 pm. However, with standing water on the outfield and the tarp, the umpires ruled the playing conditions unsafe.
As a result, Fresno State and Tulsa will resume game one tomorrow morning at 10:30 am (CDT) weather permitting. A doubleheader will then follow. If needed, game four would be played on Sunday.
The Bulldogs will need to win a minimum of three games to claim their fourth consecutive WAC title and fifth overall in six years. Fresno State, which owns the tiebreaker over Hawai'i, would win the title outright by just winning three against the Golden Hurricane.
In the event no games are able to be played, the Bulldogs own the best win percentage in conference play and would capture the conference title and the NCAA's automatic berth.
