FRESNO, Calif. - #16 Fresno State softball led off the game with a charge and the two runs in the first inning was good enough to collect a 2-1 victory over San Jose State at Bulldog Diamond.
The Bulldogs, who collected eight hits against SJSU pitcher Sabrina Quintero (12-15), led off the first with two runs on three hits. Becky Witt started things off with a chopper over the Spartan third baseman's head. Vanessa Czarnecki reached safely on a fielder's choice and Witt was safe at second as she beat the throw. Tiffany Whipple then collected an infield hit to the shortstop to load the bases. Lindsay Fossatti knocked in the first run with a RBI single to right field to score Witt. Pam Perez grounded out to the SJSU second baseman but picked up a RBI as Czarnecki crossed home plate.
The Spartans, who totaled six hits off Lori Hoffman and Leslie Poole (19-6), picked up their run in the top of the fourth. Roxanne Staniorski led off with a single to left center. With Monica Facio pinch running for her, Amy Walter sacrificed Facio to second. Veronica Ramons answered with a single up the middle off Poole. Jackie Jimenez popped out to Fossatti for the second out before Kirsten Foster roped a single to left field to score Facio.
Coming into the top of the fourth and facing the second batter, Poole picked up the win in relief and notched her 19th victory. In 4.0 innings of work, Poole gave up three hits and struck out one. Hoffman, who was given the starting nod, pitched 3.0 innings and gave up the run.
At the plate, Fresno State had six players post a hit, including multiple-hit performances by Witt (2-4, run, stolen base) and Hoffman (2-3, double).
For San Jose State, six players posted a hit as Foster (1-3) had the lone RBI.
