Golf tied at 18th After First Round

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State shot a 10-over 298 to place themselves in a three-way tie at 18th place after the first round of the NCAA West Regional concluded on Thursday, May 17, 2001. The Regional is be hosted at the Trysting Tree Country Club in Corvallis, Ore. by Oregon State.
Arizona State leads the tournament at 283 (-5) with Stanford in second trailing by one stroke at 284. The Bulldogs are the highest WAC team, the third highest District 7 team and are tied with Pacific and Southern California.
Taking on his usual leadership role for the `Dogs, Nick Watney sits in a tie for 10th place. Watney shot a 34 on the back nine and 37 on the front nine to finish 1-under 71. Watney is in the top eight golfers of teams not in the top 10, to qualify individually for the NCAA finals Watney would need to be in the top two golfers of teams not qualifying.
Tied at 74, junior Dustin Smith was the second place Bulldog. Smith shot a 3-over 75. Fellow junior Jonathon Echols shot a 4-over 76, as well as freshman Chad Spencer, to hold at T92. Finishing up the line-up was freshman Daniel Timmons show is in a T115, after shooting a 6-over 78.
The Bulldogs will need to improve in Friday's final round to qualify to move on to the finals at Duke this year. Only the top 10 placing teams will qualify and advance.
