In his first year as a Bulldog, Mat Herold, a Sherman Oaks, Calif., native played in 11 of the 18 matches, while making starts. After being sidelined with an injury for the first three matches, the forward made eight starts. Herold took 23 shots in en route to recording a season total of three points (one goal, one assist).
Q: What is one word to describe yourself on the field and why?
A: I am intense. I love the game and it is what I want to do with my life. No place brings me more joy than being on the field.
Q: How do you describe yourself off the field?
A: I think I am a passionate person. I live life filled with emotion and I care about everything, which includes my family, friends and of course soccer. I try to get the most out of life.
Q: What do you consider to be your most valuable characteristic?
A: My compassion and strength, two traits I inherited from my mom.
Q: How do other people describe you?
A: Jeremy Proud `(goalkeeper for Fresno State) said I was humorous.
Q: If you could compete against any athlete who would it be and why?
A: Definitely Edgar Davids of Ajax Amsterdam. He is a hard-nosed player and is very talented. He wouldn't give me an inch and it would be the ultimate test.
Q: What is your most favorite possession?
A: A white dog I gave to my mom with a message on the bottom.
Q: What would you like people to know about you?
A: I want them to know that I never give up under any circumstances.
Q: If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?
A: I would like to live my life more for others.
Q: If you were given three wishes, what would you wish for?
A: First I would wish to see my mom again. Second, I would wish for all of my family to reunite in heaven. And third, I would wish to be the best player in the world.
Q: What other than soccer interests you?
A: I enjoy going to school. Philosophy, life and health and nutrition classes all interest me. And I really just love spending time with my family.
