Women Head to UC Davis for Second Meet

The women's cross country team will travel to UC Davis on Sat., Sept. 22, for its second meet. The Bulldogs did not compete at the UC Davis meet last year, instead the weekend was a bye.
FRESNO STATE INVITATIONAL CANCELED
The 37th Annual Fresno State Invitational was canceled due to the tragic events which occurred on Tuesday, Sept. 11, in New York City and throughout the nation. All Fresno State athletic events were canceled or postponed, including football, volleyball, men's and women's soccer and women's basketball. Last year at the Fresno State Invitational the Bulldogs took seventh place with 176 points. Fresno State's top finisher was senior Jennifer Smith (Lake of the Pines, Calif.) who took 24th overall with a time of 23:41. Stanford took first place and had four women finish in the top five.
CROSS COUNTRY WINS ITS FIRST MEET
The women's team captured first place with 28 points at the Cal State Stanislaus Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 8. Junior Olga Gutierrez (Visalia, Calif.) won the 6K, crossing the finish line at 22:38. Sophomore Kara June (Santa Maria, Calif.) took second place with a time of 22:48. Juniors Michelle June (Santa Maria, Calif.) placed fifth (23:25) and Stacy Esquivel (Visalia, Calif.) took sixth (23:31). Last year Fresno State took third place at the meet, finishing behind UC Davis and Cal State Los Angeles. This year, the 'Dogs finished with 31 fewer points than Cal State Los Angeles, which took third place in the meet.
WOMEN IMPROVE UPON 2000 SEASON BEST TIMES
Four runners improved upon their 2000 personal records in the 6K at the Cal State Stanislaus Invitational. Junior Mandy Hollister (Turlock, Calif.) saw the biggest improvement of over one minute. Hollister improved to 25:12 upon her 2000 best of 26:53. Junior Esquivel took 21 seconds off of her previous record at 23:52. Kara June shaved almost one minute off of her 23:33 record which is now 22:48. Michelle June improved from 23:44 to 23:25.
BULLDOGS AT THE WATERMELON RUN
The women's team competed in the 2-mile race at the Watermelon Run on Saturday, Sept. 1 at Fresno State. The 2-mile run had 158 competitors, more than the 4-mile and 1-mile runs combined. The first Bulldog to finish was sophomore Kara June coming in 13th with a time of 10:52. Gutierrez and Esquivel finished within a second of each other, Gutierrez took 20th (11:22) and Esquivel finished 21st (11:23). Michelle June came in fourth for the 'Dogs and 28th overall (11:38). Junior Rachel Bauer (Clovis, Calif.) rounded out the top-30 in the race and came in fifth on the team.
