FRESNO, Calif. - Junior outside hitter Christy Burnett answered the call by head coach Lindy Vivas and charged the Bulldogs to a four-game (30-26, 22-30, 30-24, 30-21) non-conference victory over San Francisco in the North Gym.
With Fresno State riding a five-match win streak, Burnett was the only Bulldog to post a double-double after collecting 13 kills and tying for match-high honors in digs with 14. Hitting .290 (13-4-31) agains the Dons, Burnett also chipped in three blocks, including her sixth-career solo block.
Senior middle blocker Shauna McQuaid led all players in kills with 17, hit .300 (17-5-40) and had seven blocks. Junior middle blocker Java Johnson and sophomore outside hitter Kara Verwey each had 10 kills. Johnson and McQuaid tied for match-high honors in blocks with seven. Freshman outside hitter Kristen Fenton was the only other Bulldog to tally double-figures in digs with 11.
As a team, the Bulldogs hit .192 but won the blocking battle (15 to 11.5).
Games one and two were night and day for the 'Dogs. Fresno State hit .192 in game one to USF which managed a .109 hit percentage. The Dons turned the table in game two as they held the Bulldogs to a .000 hit percentage while owning a .385 hitting average. However, Fresno State took charge in games three and four, hitting better than .260 in the final two games to seal the victory.
"We came ready to play," said 11th-year head coach Lindy Vivas, who is five wins shy of collecting her 200th win at Fresno State and improved to 89-45 at home. "The three games we won we had solid ball control and passed well. Shauna did a nice job of getting the offense rolling in the middle. The outsides picked up their level of play and pushed USF. I thought Whitney (Arena) set a nice match and Java played one of her best blocking matches. The turnaround for us was Kristen's two critical blocks in the third game."
The win improved Fresno State's all-time series against San Francisco to 24-0. The Bulldogs (5-3, 0-0) open Western Athletic Conference play tomorrow evening with a 7:00 p.m. match against Boise State (0-9, 0-1). The Broncos opened WAC play this evening on the road and dropped a three-game decision to San Jose State (30-24, 30-20, 30-25).
