Match Notes
Rice is concluding a brief three-match homestand today. The Owls opened their homestand with a 3-0 loss to No. 12 Hawai'i on Thursday, Oct. 4, and dropped a four-game match to San Jose State last night. Rice, which opened the season at 2-0, is 4-6 since in its last 10 matches. Owning a 3-4 home court record this year, the Owls have been nationally-ranked in blocking this season. With three players averaging more than 1.00 blocks per game, Rice checks in at No. 21 (3.12 bpg) in the nation and leads the Western Athletic Conference in that statistical category. The Owls have won the last two meetings against Fresno State (won both last year in five games) but the Bulldogs lead the series, 4-2. Fresno State, which ranks just behind Rice in blocking in the WAC with a 3.07 block per game, brings in a nine-match win streak. The Bulldogs are also putting a 4-0 WAC mark on the line today and will look to make school history by becoming the first team to go 5-0 in WAC action. The 4-0 start by this Bulldog team has tied the longest perfect win streak by the 1992 'Dogs. Head coach Lindy Vivas will be looking to notch her 200th win at Fresno State today. She enters today's match with a 199-133 school record in 11 years. Fresno State is coming off a three-game win over Louisiana Tech on Friday, Oct. 5. The Bulldogs wrap up their WAC road swing on Monday, Oct. 8, against SMU (7-6, 2-1 WAC). The Mustangs, who are also enjoying a three-match homestand, is 2-0 in their homestand with a non-conference four-game win over TCU and a five-game victory over San Jose State this past Friday.
