Cross Country Heads to First Meet of the Season

FRESNO, Calif. - MEN HEAD TO UC IRVINE FOR FIRST MEET The men's team officially opens up its season Saturday, Sept. 8 at UC Irvine in Irvine, Calif. Last year the team did not compete in Irvine, instead running at Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock, Calif., where the women's team will be this weekend. Fresno State finished second in the 8K at the Cal State Stanislaus Invitational in 2000.
WOMEN HEAD TO CAL STATE STANISLAUS FOR FIRST MEET The women's cross country team opens up official competition Saturday, Sept. 8 at Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock, Calif. Fresno State took third place in the 6K run with 88 points at the Invitational last year. Jennifer Smith (Lake of the Pines, Calif.) came in first for the Bulldogs and finished eighth overall with a time of 23:16.3.
MEN'S TEAM TAKES CONTROL OF WATERMELON RUN The men's cross country team had a strong showing at the 36th annual Watermelon Run held Saturday, Sept. 1 on the Fresno State campus. The men entered 15 runners in the 1-mile race and every Bulldog finished in the top-20. 17 Fresno State runners finished in the top-26 in the 4-mile run.
4-MILE RACE RESULTS Newcomer Joshua Foster (Moraja, Calif.) finished first on the team in the four mile run, coming in fourth place with a time of 20:47. Moses Avila (Reedley, Calif.) took fifth place with a time of 20:48. Josh Roddy (Manteca, Calif. ), Alex Mason (Alameda, Calif.), Roberto Vaca (Sanger, Calif. ), Kyle Cirrincione (Fresno, Calif.), Thiago Ghilardi (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Phil Ogilvie (Clarksburg, Calif.) and Mike Azevedo (Hanford, Calif.) came in seventh through 13th place, respectively, and all were within one minute of each other.
1-MILE RACE RESULTS The Bulldogs dominated the 1-mile run, placing 15 runners in the top-20. Roosevelt Cook (Oakhills, Calif.) came in first on the team and second in the race with a time of 4:35. Roddy came in next at fourth place with a time of 4:48. The last Fresno State runner finished less than one minute behind the first Bulldog to come in.
WOMEN'S TEAM AT THE WATERMELON RUN The women's team competed in the 2-mile race at the Watermelon Run on Saturday, Sept. 1 at Fresno State. The 2-mile run had 158 competitors, more than the 4-mile and 1-mile runs combined. The first Bulldog to finish was Kara June (Santa Maria, Calif.) coming in 13th with a time of 10:52. Juniors Olga Gutierrez (Visalia, Calif.) and Stacy Esquivel (Visalia, Calif.) finished within a second of each other, Gutierrez taking 20th (11:22) and Esquivel finishing 21st (11:23). Michelle June (Santa Maria, Calif.) came in fourth for the 'Dogs and 28th overall (11:38). Rachel Bauer (Clovis, Calif.) rounded out the top-30 in the race and came in fifth on the team with a time of 11:51.
