RENO, Nev.- The Fresno State women's soccer team recorded its second straight victory on Thursday afternoon, blanking Nevada 3-0 in Reno, Nev., for its fourth shutout win of the season. The Bulldogs (4-11-0, 3-2-0 WAC), who had not won back-to-back contests since Oct. 21-25 of last year, exploded on offense to breeze past the Wolf Pack (3-12-0, 0-4-0 WAC).
Fresno State scored the first goal of the match in the 12th minute when freshman Katri Nokso-Koivisto (Kokkola, Finland) took a pass from sophomore Heather Fox (Morgan Hill, Calif.) and fired it past Nevada netminder Megan Tarpenning. With the goal, Nokso-Koivisto now leads the Bulldogs with seven in just her first season.
Senior Virginia Jenkins (Lompoc, Calif.) added a second goal for the 'Dogs at the 26:20 mark, connecting on an assist from freshman Ashley Saibini (Reno, Nev.) to give Fresno State a 2-0 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs, who outshot Nevada 16-5 overall and 10-2 in the second half, continued to pressure the Wolf Pack. In the 74th minute, freshman Eriko Yoshiki (Satte City, Japan) scored the first goal of her collegiate career when she headed a corner kick from Nokso-Koivisto past Tarpenning for a 3-0 lead.
Fresno State goalkeeper Mary-tyler Wahl (Riverside, Calif.) was impressive in goal, making four saves while playing the entire 90:00.
The Bulldogs will look to continue their winning ways on Sunday when they travel to Boise State for a 12 p.m. contest.
